Under the agreement, CMPnet will contact the approximately 500,000 members of its current e-mail house file of technology builders, sellers, and users and ask them to visit a special page on CMPnet and "opt in" to receive commercial e-mail messages on topics of interest.
The CMPnet names will only be rented to direct marketers that provide information and offers of a type specifically requested by CMPnet users when they register to be put on NetCreations' e-mail lists, the companies said.
When a user registers for a list, he or she checks off boxes next to a series of categories, such as PCs, software, Windows, peripherals, and Web design tools, that corresponds to needs and interests. Profile can be changed at any time.
"CMPnet's TechShopper site attracts some of the Internet's most qualified and responsive high-tech buyers," Resnick said. "By partnering with CMP, we'll be able to offer consumer and business-to-business marketers a large and responsive pool of technology professionals who are eager to receive their offers."
NetCreations will store CMPnet's e-mail addresses in its Web database, provide e-mail delivery and merge/purge services, and offer the lists for rent through its online marketplace. The CMPnet lists will initially rent for 20 cents a name, including list rental, e-mail distribution and merge/purge.
