SkyDesk Acquires SharedPlanet

File storage/backup company SkyDesk, in a move that will expand its portfolio to embrace more complex application formality, acquired software company SharedPlanet.

This acquisition will enable SkyDesk to broaden its range of service offerings. In addition to assisting in the development of superior technologies by providing its customers with increased feature functionality and access to best-of-breed services such as @Backup(R.

The founders of SharedPlanet, Bilal Chinoy and Peter Kochevar have each joined the SkyDesk team. Chinoy comes on as a senior product manager for Web-based collaboration services. Peter Kochevar as a principal architect, responsible for the research and design of new service offerings in the area of Internet-based collaboration.

As SharedPlanet's technology and SkyDesk's SkyFiler(TM) service complements one another, the companies feel the result will be a powerful teamware service providing a secure online workspace for teams to collaborate while maintaining audit trails of versions and annotations.

The addition of SharedPlanet's technology will provide the SkyFiler service with a unique Web-based layering technology that allows individuals to "communicate within context" of a document. For example, a select group of individuals may collaborate on an electronic document by overlaying multimedia annotations.

According to Gary Sutton, chief executive office, SkyDesk, both Chinoy and Kochevar, are experts in the field of collaboration technology.
