Midwest ASP Teams with IP Carrier

Application service provider Vertica Solutions Inc. Monday partnered with NetRail Inc. to serve as its national network partner.

NetRail will provide Vertica with co-location facilities nationwide, as well as transit for Vertica's ASP and e-commerce service portfolio over its national broadband IP-based network.

The two privately-held companies did not disclose financial terms of the deal.

Vertica Solutions plans will leverage the alliance to deliver its VerticaNet family of broadband transport services to its clients.

Chris Heath, Vertica Solutions president and chief executive officer, said landing a Tier One carrier with the credentials of NetRail is one of the most important strategic initiatives of this year for the firm.

"With this partnership, Vertica gains a nationwide capacity to support its ASP products, including a solid co-location strategy, direct backbone access and the performance and security of a point-to-point network", Heath said.

Vertica Solutions was founded in 1999 to deliver ASP and e-commerce products and services to mid-market customers.

Although the mid-market segment is saturated with blue chip firm's ASP service offerings, Vertica has managed to strike strategic partnerships with high-profile companies like Cabletron Systems , EMC , Citrix , and others to shore up its service strategy.

As a result of the business deals, Vertica has attracted attention from top medical, legal and engineering, and manufacturing vertical industry companies to its ASP network services. The firm forecasts that its revenues may to grow to as much as $5.5 million this year.

Founded in 1994 in Washington, D.C., and with national headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, NetRail began initial backbone buildout in 1996. It operates an all-Asynchronous Transfer Mode network, which spans the continental U.S. NetRail plans to offer co-location and points-of-presence connectivity in 40 metro areas by the end of this year.

NetRail has laid more than 20,000 fiber optic route miles of OC-3 network trunks to provide its core backbone, Internet transit and co-location services nationwide. Its sells transport services to Internet services providers, ASPs, competitive local exchange carriers and wireless carriers.

NetRail's IP infrastructure is built on Lucent Technologies, Inc. carrier-class switches and Juniper Networks, Inc. core routers. Its operating strategy is designed to bust through network congestion and provide mission critical transport of data, voice and video applications to its end-users.
