Reef, a leading global Internet software company that offers an open software foundation for e-business, announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire privately held Edapta Inc. of San Diego. Edapta is a provider of Internet-based solutions that dynamically adapt content and user interfaces across multiple platforms, including computers, wireless devices, and information appliances.
Under the terms of the agreement, Reef, also privately held, will acquire Edapta, including the company's product line, intellectual property, and core team of software engineers. Edapta co-founder, president and CTO Jack Berkowitz will become Reef's vice president of customer management and will report directly to Reef president, CEO and co-founder Philippe Brawerman. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
The acquisition reinforces Reef's vision for ubiquitous, web-based computing by providing users of Reef's Internetware suite of e-business applications with the ability to have online user experiences adapt to the type of device being used. For example, an executive working from a home office might prefer emails to be displayed on a large-screen TV, except during certain prime-time hours. A homeowner might want to access the home video security system using a smart phone while on vacation. A mobile user may wish to have emails converted to voicemail and read over a smart phone while driving.
"The ability to deliver data and applications in real time to users of mobile devices is going to be one of the key drivers of web-based business and consumer services," commented Brawerman. "The acquisition of Edapta's technology enables Reef to offer our customers a comprehensive suite of products for wireless and mobile devices that they can deploy immediately without the expense of additional development or add-on options. Reef is now also equipped to be a leader in the wireless and mobile information delivery market with a foundation for future technology development."
"At Edapta, we have always been committed to developing enabling technologies that provide universal access to digital information," noted Berkowitz. "We are impressed with Reef's shared commitment to this goal and believe that the synergies in vision and technologies between our two companies will further enhance Reef's ability to deliver pervasive, web-based e-business applications that support an increasingly mobile marketplace."
Edapta Inc. was founded in mid-1999 by software engineers who specialize in the development of enabling technologies to enhance human-computer interfaces.
