OmniSky Finds Solution in ThinAir

OmniSky, the San Francisco-based provider of wireless e-mail and Internet services for mobile devices, says it has deepened the capabilities of its wireless e-mail system via a partnership just announced with ThinAirApps, Inc. The alliance lets OmniSky offer its subscribers secure access to enterprise e-mail systems including Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Domino, Novell GroupWise, POP3 and IMAP4 compatible mail systems. By using ThinAirApps technology, OmniSky subscribers will be able to securely retrieve critical data straight from their behind-the-firewall corporate e-mail accounts.

Available this summer, the new solution combines the OmniSky service and wireless hardware with ThinAir Server. Enterprise users will have access to OmniSky's many mail services, such as fast e-mail delivery through OmniSky's compression technology, message notification, powerful message filtering, and attachment support.

"OmniSky's core expertise is understanding the unique needs of mobile professionals and delivering to them a great user experience for wirelessly accessing e-mail and Internet content," said Mike Dolbec, OmniSky's senior vice president of business development. "By using ThinAir technology, we can offer secure and powerful wireless e-mail applications for our wireless enterprise customers."

ThinAirApps produces carrier-grade wireless software that allows access to any data from any device. Applications ThinAirApps has developed allow mobile professionals to access, retrieve and interact with groupware programs such as Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Domino and Novell GroupWise, commonly inaccessible from outside an office or firewall.

As part of the agreement, ThinAirApps and OmniSky say they will jointly focus their sales and marketing aimed at corporate customes. OmniSky also will join ThinAirApps' Certified Support Program, essentially enabling OmniSky to provide quality technical support for the ThinAir technology components of the joint e-mail solution. This program will allow OmniSky to directly assist its wireless customers who are also using ThinAir Server software.
