Domain name registration service register.com is slashing its prices for registering .co.uk and .org.uk extensions to £49 ($79.45).
As a result, register.com becomes the most competitive of the services currently offering domain registration to the UK market, despite its North American base.
"At register.com, one of our top priorities is to help businesses and individuals easily take advantage of the Internet's global reach," said register.com's CEO and president Richard Forman.
"Western Europe is one of the fastest growing e-commerce markets in the world, but currently companies and individuals can pay between £80 and £200 to register a .co.uk or .org.uk domain name -- almost twice as expensive as registering .com, .net and .org domains."
Unlike physical products, many types of Internet service can be provided by overseas companies at a price that substantially undercuts the exhorbitant charges of local suppliers.
register.com, one of five companies worldwide to receive official accreditation by ICANN, has registered over 10,000 .co.uk and .org.uk domain names since June 1998.
