WRN Announces Launch of European Radio Network

World Radio Network (WRN) has announced the launch of its new European Radio Network (ERN), a group of dedicated radio services in the major languages of the European Union.

ERN will be broadcast by satellite and also made available live on the Internet serving listeners inside and outside the European Union.

ERN will carry news and current affairs, together with features on art, culture, music, sports, science and other subjects from the countries of the EU. It will reflect the ways in which different countries within the EU are reporting world events.

"Within the coming months WRN will launch four 24 hour-a-day services, one dedicated to the German language, another to French, a third to English and the fourth will be a comprehensive multilingual channel," WRN said in a statement.

All the channels, says WRN, have been made possible by "generous funding" from the European Commission.

WRN's announcement was made at the Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) conference in Berlin, Germany, held August 28 to Sept 5 at Messe Berlin. The focus at IFA is on entertainment electronics, telecommunications and the digitalisation of media technologies.

WRN was the first broadcaster in the UK to make its services available via Internet audio.
