NSI Advocates Administration's Domain Plan

Network Solutions, Inc. announced its support of the National Telecommunications & Information Administration (NTIA) paper that effectively calls for an end to the company's monopoly for registering the .com, .org, and .net domain names.

During the transitional phase of the new plan, NSI will continue to serve as a commercial registrar of .com, .net, and .org, however, and will operate the registration database for future registrars of .com, .net, and .org.

In a statement released today, the company said it welcomed the administration's plans for a more competitive domain name system that would also provide for a more reliable Internet environment.

"Network Solutions is encouraged by the commercially oriented, market focus in the Department of Commerce's recommendations issued today," said Gabe Battista, chief executive officer of Network Solutions, Inc. "NSI has long supported a competitive environment that advances growth and investment in the Internet and at the same time preserves the Internet's stability and reliability that businesses and other users require and expect."

"NSI is committed to working with all the major stakeholders, including the U.S. Government, Capitol Hill, major commercial interests and end-users for a long-term, global solution to maintain the integrity of the Internet as usage and demand increases," added Battista.

"We believe the Department of Commerce's approach establishes a broad policy framework for future governance, and we look forward to working with them on the details of the plan."
