Big Apple Leads List of Wired Cities

New York City is at the top of the heap among U.S. cities registering for domain names, according to a report from Network Solutions, Inc.

The domain name registrar's metropolitan statistical areas (MSA) analysis found the New York City hub leading with .com, .net, and .org registrations, followed by the Washington, D.C. region, and Los Angeles, from among 317 cities studied.

It came as no surprise that California, home of Silicon Valley, had five metro areas in the top ten list.

Worldwide, Net registrations in the .com, .net, and .org domains equaled 1.86 million as of the end of March, 1998, according to Network Solutions, and of these 1.43 million or 77% were of U.S. origin.

The top ten domain registration leaders in descending order:

  • New York
  • Washington, D.C.
  • Los Angeles-Long Beach
  • San Francisco
  • Boston Region
  • San Jose
  • San Diego
  • Dallas

"This analysis provides a key indicator of Internet growth and points to where electronic commerce is emerging across the nation," said Chuck Gomes, Network Solutions' vice president of customer programs, in a statement. "Individuals and businesses nationwide are establishing a unique identity on the Internet as they build their brands online."
