Yahoo! Pulls Plug on Netscape Presence

Yahoo! Inc. today announced that it will no longer feature its navigation guide services on Netscape Communications Corp.'s site.

The move follows yesterday's news that Netscape signed up almost every major search provider to become "premier" partners, with the exception of Yahoo!

A spokeswoman for Netscape said at the time that the company was still in negotiations with Yahoo! and expected the company to be signed in a less significant role as a "distinguished" provider partner.

According to Bloomberg news service, Yahoo! will serve out its remaining contract in the lower profile role in Netcenter and will be deleted from the site as of July.

It now appears that the once friendly relationship the companies enjoyed will become more competitive in nature with Yahoo! pitted against Netscape's Netcenter. Netscape has entered into a range of deals and partnerships recently to bulk up Netcenter as part of the company's ambitious "Project 60" project.

Yahoo! originally signed on with Netscape in 1997, shelling out $5 million to feature prominently in Netcenter. Yahoo! reportedly derives 5% of its traffic from Netscape.

The Web media guide is rated as the top Web site according to Media Metrix, with Netscape trailing in the number two slot.
