Gateway unveiled a new PC leasing program today that invites customers to pay for a computer using a number of financing plans, one of which offers unlimited Net access via the gateway.net Internet service.
The news follows a report by The Associated Press earlier today that said Microsoft has agreed to allow Gateway to include the gateway.net service on desktop screens and provide users with a choice of browsers.
The AP item reported that Gateway and Microsoft reached the agreement recently, but said neither company would elaborate on whether or not it was a result of government antitrust suits pending against Microsoft.
Gateway said the Your:)Ware service is aimed at offering consumers a purchase plan that tackles cost barriers and allows buyers to select customized hardware and software, along with Internet access if they choose.
At the end of a Your:)Ware financing term, Gateway said customers can keep the computer or trade it in for its average wholesale value toward the purchase of a new Gateway PC.
Payments are based on 48-month term at an Annual Percentage Rate (APR) of 14.9%.
