Lycos Launches Kids Site

Building on previous efforts to woo the youngest of Internet users, Lycos Inc. Wednesday rolled out Lycos Zone, an educational Web site for kids.

The site targets children ages 3 to 12.

Lycos (LCOS) Zone includes free access to the Lycos SearchGuard filtering technology, which also allows parents to disable e-mail and chat.

A "Homework Zone" educational site, divided by grade level, has been created by a board of editors and teachers. An kids' entertainment channel and a separate section to help parents and teachers protect children from objectionable content on the Web are also offered.

"Lycos is dedicated to making the Web a family-friendly experience by providing tools, services and content that harness the power of the Internet in safe and constructive ways," said Bob Davis, Lycos Inc. president and chief executive officer.

In June, Lycos partnered with IntelliSeek to offer Web development tutorials for kids aged 6 to 12.

In a similar move aimed at capturing the kids' Internet market, E*TRADE (EGRP) last week invested $1 million in start-up children's site ePlay Inc.
