America Online, Inc., has unveiled its new organization and management team that it hopes will position the company to capitalize on the Internet's "next wave of business opportunities" and help drive the overall growth of AOL Time Warner.
As previously announced, Barry Schuler, formerly president of AOL Interactive Services, has become chairman and chief executive officer of America Online, Inc. In his new role, Schuler announced that several executives are taking on new or expanded roles including Ray Oglethorpe, previously president of AOL Technologies, as president of America Online, Inc.; Jan Brandt, formerly president of marketing, as vice chair and chief marketing officer; and Ted Leonsis, previously president of the Interactive Properties Group, as vice chair and new product officer.
Oglethorpe, Brandt and Leonsis will all report to Schuler.
Schuler and Oglethorpe will share management responsibilities. Schuler will oversee the AOL brands, including the AOL flagship service; AOL International; the company's "AOL Anywhere" efforts, such as AOLTV and AOL Mobile; the messaging services, AOL Instant Messenger and ICQ; and the local services, AOL Moviefone, DCI and MapQuest.
Oglethorpe will be responsible for the CompuServe service, the Netscape.com portal and Netscape browsers, software development for the AOL client and AOL products, the 7,000-person Member Services Group and the data and network operations that power the company's multiple brands.
"As we begin the second 'Internet revolution,' where increasingly people are connecting to the Internet not just from their PCs, but from their cell phones and TVs and other devices, this new organizational structure will enable us to move quickly and efficiently to seize new opportunities in the United States and internationally," said Schuler. "Our job at AOL is to provide our members and users of our Web-based interactive services with compelling content, interesting new applications and unmatched ease of use, and to deliver it seamlessly -- anytime, anyplace and on any device. This new organization, by building on and making full use of our shared infrastructure, will enable us to deliver for consumers, meet our business objectives and accelerate the growth of AOL Time Warner."
Oglethorpe added,"This management structure fully utilizes the strong talent we have across the company. We believe we have the right organization, with the right people in place, to lead the industry in the next wave of growth. Our shared infrastructure allows us to very efficiently put significant resources behind key projects and initiatives to ensure that we are meeting consumers' high standards for ease of use and convenience as well as our partners' expectations for performance. I'm particularly excited about accelerating the growth of Netscape, CompuServe and our other brands, and about working with Barry and managers throughout our organization to deliver additional benefits to our members and users and to provide hosting and other technology services to businesses within AOL Time Warner."
