India Net Ad Spend to Reach $3.75 Million in 2000

Global spending on online advertising is set to more than triple within the next four years to $22 billion, according to experts.

At present Indian ad spend on Internet advertising is just less than 0.1 per cent of the $1.38 billion Indian industry. By 2000 March, Internet ad-spend in India would be to the tune of $3.75 million, said Sunil Rajashekhar, vice-president of Times of India, who quoted various studies.

"In India, the consumer-related products/services have not taken up the medium in a big way," he said. Category-wise, the leading advertisers have been computing (18 percent), financial (12 percent) and corporate (13 percent).

"IT companies, at present, though recognize the scope of the medium, are awaiting the growth of a local audience." he added. "Only Intel, which has spent the highest on Indian Internet advertising -- $0.37 million -- is aware that traffic is growing and will grow."

In India, since 10 publishers were capturing 70 percent of the total ad-revenue on the Internet, it would be the survival of the fittest.
