Canadian telecoms giant North American Gateway is bringing Internet access to the UK that is free from set-up costs, subscription fees and telephone charges.
The service, named CallNet 800, will start on November 1.
The move comes as a result of an initiative between North American Gateway, UK mobile phone retailer Phones4u, F1-Racing magazine and UK Internet service provider CallNet. The partners are expecting to register 200,000 users before Christmas. It could be a lot more, but the project's backers are undaunted.
CallNet 0800 will require no minimum spend requirements or minimum contract period. Users will also save 30 per cent on the cost of normal telephone calls in comparison to BT rates. In fact, the only condition is that users dial 145 before making a call in order to qualify for savings.
The introduction of a fully integrated telecommunications package covering mobile, fixed-line and Internet further consolidates Phones 4u's ethos of customer led, value for money services and our commitment to not be beaten on price," said Bill Colley, managing director of Phones 4u.
