AltaVista Gets a Makeover

Web portal AltaVista took a page from the books of its competitors by unveiling a new version of its Internet guide organized into channels.

"This new site is clean, simple, relevant and to the point--it makes navigating the Internet more effective than ever before," said Rod Schrock, senior vice president and group general manager of consumer products.

New features include question-and-answer searches powered by the Ask Jeeves search utility, the companies said. No financial details of the alliance were disclosed.

Other new capabilities include the photo finder multimedia search, designed to find pictures and graphics, filters to eliminate material from searches and new techniques intended to make searching easier and more precise.

"We are tremendously excited to deliver the most significant update to AltaVista since its inception," Schrock said. "We expect it to have great consumer appeal that will ensure the rapid, continued growth of AltaVista."

AltaVista is a division of Compaq Computer Corp.
