Netscape Gives IE Users a TuneUp

Netscape Communications Corp. Thursday plans to officially release the beta version of TuneUp for Internet Explorer, its integration tool for users of arch rival Microsoft Corp.'s Web browser.

Initially announced Oct. 1, the ActiveX-control will enable users of Microsoft's browser to access Netscape's Smart Browsing feature, allowing users to search the Web by typing keywords in the address window. It will also include integrated access to such Netcenter services as My Netscape, Web-based e-mail, SmartUpdate, search, contact and the member directory.

Today's Netscape offering was originally slated for release at the end of October. Netscape did not give a reason for the delay, but speculation is the release was timed to coincide with Wednesday's launch of the first beta of Internet Explorer 5.

The free software will be available for download at the Netcenter Download area.
