Freeserve, BT Cellnet Cut the Wire

Freeserve PLC and BT Cellnet Thursday joined hands and leapt into the deep end of the wireless pool.

The two companies will develop wireless Internet services with support from BT Cellnet-owned mobile ISP and portal Genie Internet, according to several published reports.

SMS transmissions will the first service to become available through the alliance, with co-developed wireless application protocol (WAP) capabilities next on the slate. By next year, additional features are expected to become available through BT Cellnet's GPRS system, according to reports.

Freeserve (FREEV) e-mail services, the first of the duo's services, will start in January.

Financial terms were not disclosed.
