Telstra Unleashes its Own WAP

Hot on the heels of the launch of Cable & Wireless Optus' Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) offering, telecommunications carrier Telstra has announced its own WAP service.

Telstra will enable its customers to access the service via a WAP mobile phone, and has chosen Internet services software developer and WAP Forum founding member Phone.Com as its technology provider.

Although it will initially be available on GSM, Telstra also plans to deploy the service in future on its CDMA network.

The service will utilise content from Telstra information tool, telstra.com. Through WAP, users will be able to access e-mail, national news, a CNN news service, weather, horoscopes, lotteries, sports information and banking.
