Verio Takes Melbourne IT Stake

Web hosting firm Verio Inc. is taking a 4.9 percent stake in Australian domain registrar Melbourne IT as part of a strategic relationship announced late last week.

The deal enables Melbourne IT's global domain name registry business, Internet Names WorldWide (INWW), to provide domain name registration services to Verio's customer base of about 525,000 domain name holders.

Verio, which provides Web hosting, e-commerce and virtual private networks, said it needed an international technology company to provide an outsourced, scaleable domain name registration system.

Internet Names WorldWide offers scaleable infrastructure, real-time registration and online tools and services to support its customers' business activities.

Currently customers can register domain names of up to 63 characters in .com, .net and .org as well as com.au. Expanded services will include domain names in .uk (United Kingdom), .fr (France), .es (Spain), .jp (Japan) and other country code top-level domains.
