Phone.com Acquires ASP

Phone.com, Inc. Monday acquired Onebox.com, a communications application service provider (ASP) for $850 million in stock.

Phone.com (PHCM) is a vendor of Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)-related infrastructure products. Onebox.com is a communications application service provider providing unified e-mail, voice mail, fax, and wireless-enabled communication applications.

Onebox.com aims its carrier-grade products at wireless telecom operators and Internet service providers (ISPs). It claims 2.5 million registered end users worldwide.

The companies say that Onebox.com's suite of applications will be integrated with Phone.com's offerings and will be delivered both as outsourced solutions and standalone products to telecom and ISPs.

"We now significantly broaden our target markets and product offerings," said said Alain Rossmann, chairman and chief executive officer of Phone.com. "Together we will provide telecom and Internet-based service providers a time-to-market advantage in deploying the next-generation killer applications as the convergence of the Internet and wireless telephony accelerates."

Phone.com is a software provider for Internet-based services to mass-market wireless telephones. The company last week announced the acquisition of Paragon, which provides mobile data synchronization tools. It purchased Paragon for $500 million.
