Microsoft's global browser usage share continues to rise, but at a slower pace, according to a recent report from Internet measurement firm WebSideStory.
As of Feb. 21, 2001, the worldwide usage share of Microsoft's Internet Explorer was 87.71%, according to WebSideStory's StatMarket, up from 86.08% on June 18, 2000. Mountain View, Calif.-based Netscape, Microsoft's closest competitor in the browser market, saw its global usage share decline nearly two percent during that same period, capturing only 12.01% of the market.
Although Microsoft's growth in the browser market is slowing since its heydays two years ago, Explorer use has soared 64.60% since Feb. 1999, according to the StatMarket report, while Netscape's share has dropped from 33.43%.
Most of that shift in market share occurred in 1999 and early 2000, following America Online's purchase of Netscape in late 1998 for more than $4 billion.
