Apple Computer (Nasdaq: AAPL) Monday its announced its latest version of QuickTime and is previewing its latest QuickTime Streaming Server.

The Cupertino-based company's QuickTime platform currently competes with other streaming audio and video solutions like Real Player and Windows Media Player.

"QuickTime has been long established as the digital media standard for capturing, encoding and delivering content on the Internet," says Apple VP of Marketing Phil Schiller.

Both the QuickTime 5 and QuickTime Streaming Server 3 are based on an open source platform and can be used by either Macintosh or PC devices. Apple is also demonstrating a preview version of QuickTime with support for industry-standard MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 encoding and decoding.

What's new for QuickTime 5 is a fresh face that taps into Apple's QuickTime TV channels. There's also a new DV codec which improves on the encoding process and a component downloader to add Apple's own enhancements as well as third-party plug-ins. QuickTime 5 also offers full support for MPEG-1, Flash 4 and QuickTime's new Cubic VR technology.

Apple's QuickTime Streaming Server 3 includes skip protection and a new easy-to-use web-based interface that can be administered locally or remotely to configure server settings.

The company boasts that a Mac OS X Server on a Power Mac G4 with QuickTime Streaming Server 3 can support more than3,000 concurrent streams to QuickTime users. Apple's Darwin Streaming Server, the open source version of QuickTime Streaming Server 3, offers support for FreeBSD, Linux, Solaris, Windows NT and Windows 2000.

Apple is looking to make some ground on the competition when it comes to consumer's top choice for media players. A Nielsen/NetRatings survey found that in March, Apple's QuickTime had just over 8 percent reach, putting it third after Real Player's 30 percent reach and Microsoft's Windows Media Player with a reach of more than 13 percent. The company says it has a good start based on the estimated 150 million copies of QuickTime 4 already in distribution.

Right now, you can downloadQuickTime 5 for free. QuickTime Streaming Server 3 will be available in May 2001.
