The Japanese units of Intel Hewlett-Packard and NTT East Corp. on Friday will begin jointly testing video distribution over a fiber-optic network, the firms announced Thursday.
The six-month trial over the B-Flets fiber-optic network of NTT East will involve transmitting video data at a speed of 6 megabits a second, producing images with higher resolution than ordinary television programs.
Intel and HP will carry out development and operation of the video distribution system.
The NTT East fiber-optic network is capable of sending data at up to 100 megabits a second, dramatically faster than the 1.5 megabits per second possible over asymmetrical digital subscriber lines (ADSLs).
The extremely fast transmission speeds require the development of special software and equipment needed to ensure the smooth reception of high-resolution video images.
In a separate, but related story, HP is relocating about 100 of its engineers responsible for developing server chipsets to Intel, according to published reports.
The agreement is expected to help bring Intel's Itanium processor to more servers and computers.
