Domain name registry New.net Thursday inked a deal with Europe's largest ISP to increase its user base to more than 93 million worldwide.
Under the partnership, Tiscali's 7.5 million active subscribers across 14 countries will have automatic access to New.net's domain names in users' native languages.
The Sherman Oaks, Calif.-based company spawned by idealab! says this is its first pan-European ISP deal. Ticali's subscribers in 14 countries include: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
"Tiscali's strong position in Europe also reaffirms our strategy of working with leading ISPs around the world to ensure we fully understand the needs of Internet users in many different countries," says New.net CEO David Hernand. "We are particularly pleased that Tiscali's base of German and Italian subscribers will now benefit directly from our recent launch of German and Italian extensions such as .gmbh and .turismo."
ICANN recently agreed to seven new Web extensions including .biz, .info, .pro, and .name. But, New.net and others have criticized the organization for its lackadaisical approach to launching the new domain name extensions.
This is not New.net's first dealings with foreign extensions. Back in October the company launched its first German and Italian extensions including .familie (family), .spiel (play), .amore (love) and of course .ciao.
New.net will now offer Tiscali's customers access to new Web addresses with extensions in several local languages, including English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian.
All New.net domain names available for registration on the New.net Web site for the standard US$35 per year.
