PowerTel Expands Access With New Deal

[Sydney, Australia] -- National telecommunications carrier PowerTel will look to expand its network delivery in preparation for digital broadcasting, after forming a strategic relationship with fellow carrier Soul Pattinson Telecommunications (SPT).

Through the deal, PowerTel is seeking to reach "new and complementary markets", according to chief executive officer Stephen Butler, with his compny continuing its primary focus on Central Business District areas, while SPT develops its regional focus.

The agreement will provide both companies with a fully diverse network offering, with SPT's microwave network complemented by PowerTel's fibre optic network.

With their combined microwave/fibre optic service, each company will also be able to enhance their regional coverage, as PowerTel will be able to gain access to the SPT network in regional Australia, while SPT will have access to PowerTel's reach in and between capital cities along the eastern seaboard.

This network is designed to handle loads from digital television broadcasting that is to commence next year, and for this reason the new telco partners will be targeting television broadcasters, and sectors that require secure networks.

SPT is currently completing its network from Sydney to Brisbane, intends to finish its Sydney to Melbourne network over the next 12 months.
