Yahoo! Launches Chinese Edition

Yahoo! today announced the launch of Yahoo! Chinese which will be made available in versions featuring both traditional and simplified characters.

Yahoo! said its Chinese edition contains over 10,000 Chinese Web sites separated into 14 sections by Chinese speaking surfers from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China.

Information for specific countries and regions is offered via localized content, in addition to worldwide coverage of news, sports, the arts, culture, and other topics.

News providers include CIC (China Internet Corporation), which aggregates content from Xinhua News, Bloomberg, Agence France Presse, Reuters, and Nikkei; China Times Interactive, a Taiwanese online newspaper; and CNA (Central News Agency), Taiwan's news agency offering news feeds from United Press International and the Associated Press.

Charter advertisers include IBM, Cathay Pacific Airways Limited, Chinese Books Cyberstore Limited, Hong Kong Tourist Association, Intel, Mother Nature's General Store, Motorola, and Texas Instruments.

"Yahoo!'s goal is to continue to bring together Web resources and services in a context that makes the most sense and brings the most value to the different segments of our users," said Heather Killen, vice president, international at Yahoo!

"Because people who read Chinese are not limited to the same geographic region, we've combined regional Web content along with general interest content to enable individuals from all over the world to communicate and share in similar cultural ties and interests."

This latest member of the Yahoo! family of international sites joins similar brands in the United Kingdom and Ireland, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Italy, Canada, Australia/New Zealand, Japan, and Asia and Korea.
