Akamai, F5 Networks Team to Speed Web Traffic

Akamai Technologies and F5 Networks Inc. Wednesday paired their technologies to create a product that routes users to the closest available content on the Akamai network.

Called the "Akamaizer," it will be made available as an add-in software module to F5's BIG-IP Controller and as a standalone appliance.

Akamai and F5 , a Net traffic and content management products provider, developed the Akamaizer to help e-commerce firms and other dot-coms better distribute content. The Akamaizer will be one of many features of F5's flagship iTCM product BIG-IP, which are designed to add another level of fault tolerance to e-business networks.

This level of control allows businesses to get the most out of backend resources within their Internet infrastructure and improve the performance of servers and applications.

Both firms hope the Akamaizer is an effective remedy to the Web's maligned speed and congestion problems. The Akamaizer automatically directs requests to the closest Akamai server.

"The Akamaizer optimizes existing 'Akamaized' networks and empowers e-businesses to deliver the superior service level that their customers demand," said Carl Amdahl, chief technical officer at F5 Networks.

The BIG-IP Controller with the Akamaizer feature will be available in the third quarter of this year.
