Canadian Book Retailer Goes Online

Chapters will launch its new e-commerce site, ChaptersGlobe.com, in October. The site was rapidly developed in alliance with The Globe and Mail newspaper, over the past six months.

Chapters is reportedly the largest Canadian book retailer, formed by the 1995 merger of Coles and SmithBooks. It operates bookstores in all provinces under the names Chapters, Coles, SmithBooks/LibrairieSmith, Classic Bookstores, The Book Company, and the World's Biggest Bookstore.

"ChaptersGlobe.com will be a major part of this company's future," said Larry Stevenson, President and CEO of Chapters Inc. "Going online allows Chapters to be accessible to all Canadian communities. Just as the opening of Chapters book superstores has expanded the book market in Canada, ChaptersGlobe.com will make more books available to even more people."

The site will provide access to Canada's largest online selection of books in addition to content from The Globe and Mail and a variety of other book-related information.

Chapters also announced that the company secured 14 new locations for book superstores, putting it well on the way to meeting its goal of 75 superstores by the year 2000.

"Our objective has always been to secure the very best locations. These new sites are easily accessible and highly visible," said Stevenson.

Chapters obviously thinks that the Web is a highly visible and accessible location too.
