Looking Back on Internet Explorer at 15

At the ripe old age of 15, is Internet Explorer in decline? While recent years have seen the browser lose market share to rivals like Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft has big plans for IE with the upcoming release of version 9.

But as Microsoft looks ahead to IE9, it's worth taking a look back at the storied history of the browser that first greeted the world as an add-on to Windows 95. From Netscape through the battles with the Justice Department and the European Union and on through to Mozilla, Safari, Opera and Google Chrome, Datamation has a retrospective.


Happy 15th birthday Internet Explorer. Microsoft's venerable IE browser turned 15-years-old this past Monday, but has seen its dominant market share start to slip.

It's been a contentious decade and a half for IE, but once again, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) is hoping for big things from IE9, the long-awaited next release of the Internet Explorer browser.
