Internet search engine AltaVista Co will offer its German customers 10 minutes cost-free Internet access a day from next month in a bid to attract more users.

After 10 minutes of free use customers will be charged 4.9 pfennigs per minute to stay online, the head of AltaVista's German operation Mathias Schmitz said at a news conference. The scheme is to be introduced on July 10.

AltaVista, which is majority-owend by Internet venture capital firm CMGI Inc., said in February 56 million users worldwide had visited AltaVista and more than half its visitors were from outside the United States.
