CultureNet Sweden Goes Online

Looking to expand its culture to an international audience, the Swedish government recently launched CultureNet Sweden, a new portal with over 2,500 links on the Net in English.

The main navigation selection gives visitors 48 categories to choose from. Under Recommended Sites you find selected sites of interest for the international visitor. The ambitious project has also a search tool designed for easy navigation through archives, libraries, museums and other cultural institutions.

CultureNet is the English-language section of a much larger project about the Swedish culture.

"We work for the Swedish government and our mission is to make it easier to experience the culture on the Net," said Cissi Billgren Askwall, who works for CultureNet. "At the Web site we publish good examples of how culture can be presented in digital form and the site makes it easier for foreigners to plan before a visit to Sweden."

The project is administered by The Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences and is the oldest engineering academy in the world.

The main objective of the academy is to promote the engineering and economic sciences for the benefit of Swedish society. In co-operation with the business and academic communities, the academy initiates and proposes measures to strengthen Sweden's industrial skills base and competitiveness.
