"Wipro Net is in the process of launching its services in Jamshedpur, and would extend the same to Baroda and Visakhapatnam by November this year," said T.K. Kurien, managing director of Wipro Net, adding that the investment would be mainly for infrastructural expansion and rolling out management services.
Wipro has applied for licenses for gateways in Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Calcutta, Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Chandigarh. The new gateways, once commissioned, would allow the company to roll out better services to its clients.
"A major part of the investment would be channeled towards introducing management services," Kurien said. He, however, declined to divulge details about the mechanism Wipro would adopt for funding the upcoming investment.
Wipro Net, a category A (national) ISP, currently has a presence in major cities such as Chandigarh, Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta. The company currently offers ISP services under retail and business segments, and claims a user base of around 900 corporate clients.
Wipro recently reduced its stake in Wipro Net to 47 percent, and divested the rest in favor of KPN Mauritius Holdings and ICICI.
