Lucent Technologies Takes On PNW Projects

New Jersey-based Lucent Technologies is teaming up with the two Pacific Northwest companies, as part of its focus on high-growth areas such as broadband and mobile Internet infrastructure.

Seattle-based Burst Wireless will be collaborating with Lucent Technologies in a trial of portable, high speed, wireless Internet access to residential and small business users in the Pacific Northwest. Beaverton-based Integra will expand its agreement with Lucent Technologies to deploy packet switching and voice messaging solutions that will enable Integra to enhance and expand voice, data, long distance and high-speed Internet access services.

As regard Burst Wireless, under the agreement, Lucent will provide networking equipment and software, professional services and network management.

The trials, scheduled to begin third quarter of this year, will take place in Port Angeles and will involve about 50 participants.

"This collaboration with an industry leader like Lucent is an important step in our vision to make portable, broadband, feature-rich Internet experience a reality," says George Tronsrue, Burst chairman and CEO.

As regard Integra Telecom, Integra will use Lucent's 7R/E Networks Distinctive Remote Module (DRM) and VCDX switch to convert its network to ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) transport of communications services.

Lucent will also supply Integra with its Unified Messenger for Service Providers, an easy-to-use unified messaging system for seamlessly accessing and managing voice, email, and fax messages using any telephone or a multimedia personal computer.

Lucent's deployment of equipment is under way and is expected to be completed by the end of October.
