Lucent Bows Spinoff Company, Six IP Products

Lucent Technologies Wednesday unveiled six IP solutions created under the umbrella of its spin-off company, Avaya Communication .

The announcement followed on the heels of a joint IP-based technology venture launched Wednesday by Cisco Systems and NEC.

Avaya Communication is the former Enterprise Network Group of Lucent. The networking technology organization launched products designed to provide reliable, feature-rich IP solutions to the widest range of business organizations.

The new products -- Avaya Enterprise Class IP Solutions, also referred to as ECLIPS products -- aim to brings the reliability, voice quality, feature/functionality and interoperability to the world of pure IP communications, according to the company. The products are intended for enterprise customers ranging from startups to large multinational corporations.

"The difference in Avaya's approach to IP communications is our understanding that voice is a mission-critical application, and our deep experience in providing IP Solutions that deliver on the real value of convergence to thousands of users around the world," said Don Peterson, Avaya president and CEO. "The products we're introducing clearly signal that Avaya ECLIPS products set the benchmark for putting mission-critical applications on IP networks."

The new products include:

  • The IP600 Internet Protocol Communications Server, a 19-inch rack-mounted, 100 percent IP solution.
  • The R300 Remote Office Communicator, designed to seamlessly extends the Avaya IP Communications Servers' robust features and applications to remote locations over the WAN with central administration.
  • The DEFINITY IP Solutions software, intended to provide improved traffic handling, superior voice quality over packet facilities, and advanced support for Avaya IP Telephones and Softphone.
  • The Directory Gateway, a Web-access tool for streamlined workflow and information management in a converged voice/data environment.
  • Fully functional IP Telephones designed to offer superior sound quality and easy upgrades through downloadable firmware.
  • A second-generation IP Softphone with support for seven languages.

Avaya will officially launch on September 30. Products will be available in the U.S. within 60 days nationally, and internationally beginning 30 days later.
