Puzzle Systems Corp. introduced SatServ, a software package that turns a Windows 95 workstation equipped with a DirecPC satellite dish into an Internet access server for LANs.
"SatServ provides a very high bandwidth LAN connection to the Internet for e-mail and web access yet does so at an affordable price. When used in conjunction with Hughes' DirecPC product, it's an outstanding solution that even small-/medium-sized businesses and schools can easily afford and benefit from," said James Leslie, Puzzle Systems' president.
With SatServ installed, LAN users can access information at speeds up to 400 Kb/sec. For comparison: that is 14 times faster than a 28.8 Kb modem and three times faster than ISDN. As the vendor points out, an organization needs only one copy of the SatServ software per LAN, and it does not tie up the host system to dedicated SatServ-only operations.
LAN users can access their e-mail and the World-Wide Web using applications running on all the available platforms, including Macintosh, OS/2, Windows 3.x, Windows 95, Windows NT, DOS, and Unix. There is no limit to the number of users that can be accommodated by the system.
