Big Apple early birds got a copy of the New York Post yesterday for a quarter with the banner headline: "BUSH WINS."

This morning, more than 600 copies of that edition of the Post were being hawked on eBay, with the bids reaching $200.

The New York Post and some 400 newspapers around the country erroneously declared George W. Bush the winner in the still too-close-to-call presidential poll. And, once the newspapers were pulled from newsstands, the bidding began on eBay and Yahoo! Auctions.

A seller on eBay listed as "das107" attracted a $200 bid for his copy with a pitch that read:

"New York Post from Wednesday, November 8th 2000, after initial election returns. Banner headline reads: "BUSH WINS!" But recount was soon called for, and the papers were immediately retracted. Extremely rare; only delivered to a small number of NY City street vendors. Inside headline reads, "GEORGE W. BEATS GORE IN SQUEAKER."

Sellers were doing their very best to attract bidders. One sales pitch declared, "Paper in new, mint condition. Don't miss out on this collector's item. A real conversation piece that involves political history in the making. People will be talking about this twenty years from now."

A search on eBay showed 1,605 items up for sale under the keywords "Bush Wins." Dailies that were up for grabs also included early editions of the The Miami Herald, The Des Moines Register, the Forth Worth Star-Telegram, The Florida Times-Union and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
