Hot, Hot, Hot: ISDEX Up 78% Year To Date

Mecklermedia's Internet Stock Index is up 78% since January. Just when you thought it couldn't get any more sizzle, ISDEX gained another 5% this past week. Who's on top and not? The 50 stocks sorted by ups and downs follows.

Driving the ardor seems to be a combination of bottom up zeal, momentum players and those who finally got tired of watching many in this basket of pure-play Internet stocks climb. A bull market background helps, also, which leads us to believe that if the inherent risk in some of these emerges, a burn of another kind could be felt. Bear burn.

While we think that some potential exists in a handful of stocks here to run up, we'll save the analysis for reports on who could be waiting for the go.

  • 98.04.21: RealNetworks (NASDAQ:RNWK) reports $12.5 million first quarter revenue, up 97% vs. 1Q97. Net losses without acquisition charges are $2.2 million or $0.07 loss per share. RNWK takes a $17.9 million charge thanks to its buy of Vivo Software, Inc. All tally, net loss for 1Q is $0.65 loss per share for the media streaming software leader, producer of RealAudio and RealVideo software.

  • 98.04.20: Sportsline (NASDAQ:SPLN) gets coverage from Salomon Smith Barney which starts coverage with a "buy" rating and $46 per share target price. For those readers who've been with us, SPLN was one of the ones we picked to watch in 1998 on December 31, 1997 when it was $10.75 per share. SPLN closes at $37.1875 per share today. On April 17 Sportsline (NASDAQ:SPLN) raises net proceeds of about $81 million in a secondary offering of $4 million shares, 2.2 million offered by the sports content service and 1.7 million by selling shareholders.

  • 98.04.17: @Home (NASDAQ:ATHM) climbs on enthusiasm following its first quarter analyst conference where it reports revenue of $5.8 million for first quarter and subscriber growth up 80% to 90,000. Losses from operations come in as expected at $11.7 million, $0.10 loss per share vs. $11.8 million, $0.11 loss per share 1Q97. We think @Home could be the AOL of high-speed Internet. Who do we see as the biggest rival? WebTV. Microsoft builds market share now at 28.8 and carries that user base to the high-speed TV-Web of tomorrow. If @Home needs to scramble some NetTV deals and sign 'em up now at any speed.

  • 98.04.16: Infoseek (NASDAQ:SEEK) continues to be the story as 33 million shares traded hands today pushing the shares up another new high at $44.19 per share, 30% over yesterday's new high, for a stock that's already gone ballistic. Short-term we would caution over-eager investors that SEEK had quite a loss last year, the most losses in the search group, and that we don't think it's out of the woods yet. We'll see where its first quarter comes in at soon.
