The integration of QuickTime with Traffic Server will provide users with streaming of live and on demand QuickTime programming and will also enable content providers and network operators to distribute, track and manage streaming content.

"QuickTime provides the highest quality streaming audio and video over the Internet," said Frank Casanova, director of Apple's (AAPL) QuickTime product marketing.

As part of the deal, Digital Island will deploy QuickTime across its content delivery network.

"High quality streaming media is rapidly becoming a prerequisite for global e-Business, and Inktomi's content distribution infrastructure and caching technology will provide our customers worldwide with an advanced service for delivering QuickTime streaming media," said Tim Wilson, vice president of marketing at Digital Island. "We believe that streaming media will be the new face of e-Business, placing a direct correlation between quality and click-through to the buy button".

Inktomi (INKT) technology provides Digital Island with a content delivery infrastructure to deliver content and applications at the edges of its network. Inktomi's content distribution and delivery platform enables streaming audio and video to be cached and served from distributed servers across the network, in real time or on demand. By moving streaming files closer to end users, carrier and enterprise networks can reduce bandwidth consumption, speed delivery, and reduce packet loss and interference that can disrupt the user experience.
