Virage Inc. Monday unveiled a search engine for video on the World Wide Web.
The Virage Internet Video Guide provides portals, destination sites and ISPs with a search index, offering users search results and rich information about video on the Web.
In addition, the company announced that RealNetworks Inc. is using the guide to power video searches on RealPlayer, Real.com Guide and RealJukebox.
Virage's indexing software is designed to continually update an online index of video files. This index, and the associated search engine, provides users with the ability to locate videos based on their content, not simply by file names or text surrounding video on a web page.
The guide can can be integrated into any Web site, providing support for the increasing amounts of broadband content. The search and results pages can be completely customized, while data centers provide complete outsourced application hosting of the video search.
Michael Moon, president at GISTICS Inc., a research firm that tracks the worldwide media producer industry, gave accolades to the product.
"With this new piece of Internet infrastructure in place, portals and destination sites now have a great way to help Web surfers quickly find and browse particularly relevant videos," he said.
