"AltaVista users will be able to access directly a tailor made Scoot classified transaction service, which delivers a substantially enhanced user experience," it said.
"The service will seamlessly blend two leading Internet brands, creating additional awareness and incremental consumer to business transactions for both companies," Scoot said.
AltaVista has just launched a UK version of its website. Altavista.co.uk, which it says covers 90 percent of British Web sites, or 17 million pages, in its search.
"The partnership with AltaVista will bring together two of the leading innovators on the Internet," said Miranda Cleverdon, Scoot chief commercial officer.
"We anticipate AltaVista users will benefit from Scoot's powerful consumer-centric transaction service in the UK, whilst our subscribers will benefit from incremental transactions."
Scoot offers a kind of Internet yellow pages that it hopes will make money by automatically referring customers to
businesses and telling businesses about customers on its database that might want their services.
