Yahoo! Introduces Web Services

Portal giant Yahoo! Inc. Thursday expanded its consumer services with the rollout of Web hosting and domain registration sites.

Yahoo! Website Services is geared to provide people with the tools and flexibility they need to build, host and maintain their online presence in an efficient and secure environment.

The property also allows one-click access to two additional new Yahoo! services: Yahoo! Domains an easy-to-use online location to quickly search for, register and host personalized .com, .org, or .net domain names, and Yahoo! Servers, a dedicated server hosting solution offering maximum reliability and flexibility.

For people selling items via their site, Yahoo! Website Services offers expanded commerce opportunities through its integration with Yahoo! Classifieds, Yahoo! Auctions, Yahoo! Store and Yahoo! Shopping.

With Yahoo! Servers, consumers can administer their server remotely and easily upgrade and customize their dedicated server to best fit their needs. Customers may use RedHat Linux, FreeBSD or WindowsNT.

With Yahoo! Domains, users can use the Yahoo! Domains "Wizard" to create a simple business card Web page and use personalized e-mail addresses with their registered domain.

"We're providing our consumers with the tools they need to create, maintain, and host their Web site, whether they are using it for personal or professional use," said Rich Rygg, senior director, business services, Yahoo! Inc .

The roll out comes a day after Yahoo!'s Chief Executive Officer Tim Koogle expounded on the importance of the Net at a technology conference in San Francisco. Koogle predicted that local calls will be carried through Internet service providers. He said evidence of the impending takeover of phone lines by ISPs can be found in the rapid build-out of data centers by phone firms.
