Keeping an Open Source Eye on Interop

LAS VEGAS –- The 18,000 visitors expected to descend on Interop this year will be tapping into an open source network that provides connectivity of all kinds.

The network, InteropNet, is a custom environment for Interop that serves as a networking technology showcase.

Tony Barbagallo, vice president of product management and marketing at GroundWork, said that GroundWork Monitor at Interop represents a complete network monitoring and management package to monitor the show.

Traditionally, InteropNet has been driven by proprietary software. But this year, GroundWork is open sourcing the network with its Interop-enhanced suite of monitoring projects called GroundWork Monitor Professional.

In addition to GroundWork's own open source contribution to GroundWork Monitor, the suite includes network-monitoring tool Nagios; network visualization and usage tool Network Weathermap; SNMP network monitor Multi Router Traffic Grapher; and data-logging and graphing tool RRDtool.

Though the Interop tradeshow is a great showcase for the company, it isn't just for tradeshow networks. GroundWork is aiming at the midsize company sweet spot.

"They perhaps may want all the features of an HP OpenView or an IBM Tivoli but simply can't afford the price tag," Barbagallo said. "Lower-end commercial products may not have the comprehensive coverage for these folks, so that's the target."

GroundWork Monitor is available in an open source and a professional version, which is available on a subscription basis and adds additional enterprise reporting capabilities.
