VMware Grabs Java Developer GemStone

VMware's alliance with Salesforce just got much more interesting. The two firms planned to build a Java-to-Salesforce bridging platform called VMforce. That project will get a nice boost from VMware's latest acquisition, Gemstone.

Gemstone offers a data management layer for Java applications suitable for enterprise-scale Java apps. So what can a virtualization company like VMware or an on-demand company like Salesforce do with them? finds out.

VMware today announced that its SpringSource division plans to acquire privately held data management vendor GemStone in a move to expand SpringSource's portfolio of Java software tools and servers for scaling enterprise application data.

GemStone develops data management layer software, including the GemFire in-memory distributed data management platform and SQLFabric, which provides Java caching. Terms of the purchase were not disclosed.
