Terra Lycos, the Internet service and content giant, has announced a new paid music service as part of its ongoing effort to wean itself off ad revenue in favor of more reliable customer subscriptions.

The offering, dubbed Rhapsody and available through the Lycos Music, boasts selections ranging from Jennifer Lopez and Linkin Park to Bruce Springsteen and Simon and Garfunkel.

In all, more than 10,000 albums from four of the five major labels, are available. It is powered by Listen.com, a San Francisco maker of digital music delivery technology.

"With unlimited streams on-demand, artist information, excellent audio quality and a competitive price, Lycos Rhapsody provides a compelling way for consumers to listen to and interact with music," said David Pritchard, of Terra Lycos.

Lycos Rhapsody has three tiers of service:

• no charge: 20 radio stations, FM sound quality
• $4.95 /month: 50 commercial-free radio stations, CD sound quality, track-skipping
• $9.95/month: unlimited on-demand streams, 50 commercial-free radio stations, CD-quality sound, track-skipping

Users get free access to the service until June 30, and then can choose from three tiers of service, based on music preferences.

Terra Lycos, which is based in Madrid and has U.S. headquarters in Waltham, Mass., has rolled out several subscription offerings in recent months. The latest was computer game service Lycos Arcade.

Shares of TRLY were off a fraction to 5.22 at midday. In the last 52 weeks, the issue has ranged from 4.5 to 9.27.
