XOOM.com Launches Auction Service

Direct e-commerce company XOOM.com Inc. joined the increasingly crowded auction fray XOOM.com Auctions, an online person-to-person auction service.

The auctions service provides members with another online purchasing option and strengthens the company's core business of direct selling via e-mail by allowing XOOM.com to attract more online consumers to its site who it can then target with products and services based on their interests and needs.

To kickoff XOOM.com Auctions and to raise money for The Breast Cancer Fund, XOOM.com and Lilith Fair 1999 are auctioning a concert trip package.

"XOOM.com Auctions not only provides online buyers with another purchasing option from our site, but it also supports our direct e-commerce strategy by allowing us to establish a closer relationship with more online buyers so that we go back to them with product and service offers based on their interests," said Chris Kitze, chairman of XOOM.com.

The auction service is powered by FairMarket Inc., a provider of private-label auction technology and services.

XOOM.com Auctions will feature over 15,000 product listings within 14 main categories, including sports, home and garden, collectibles, computer hardware and software.

Features include free listings, real time bidding, search functionality, a seller rating system for buyer assurance, automatic proxy bidding, real time notification on bid status changes and a watch list to track specific auctions.

XOOM.com offers consumers free services over the Web, including homepage building, chat rooms, message boards, HTML e-mail, online greeting cards, a Web page counter, clip art and downloadable software. The company targets its 8.8 million members with product and service offers relevant to their needs and interests.
