Go Network Adds Auctions

Adding to its community services in an attempt to rival other portals, GO Network Wednesday added auction services to its site.

GO Netwok Auction is the latest offering by GO, the joint venture of Disney Corp. (DIS) and Infoseek Corp. (SEEK). Like other auction sites, it provides users the opportunity to bid and sell personal items through its service, for a commission.

Features include more than one hundred categories of items, a search tool for specific items, charity auctions, chat areas and a rating system for buyers and sellers. The company also signed a deal with i-Escrow Inc. to provide escrow services for reliable transactions, and all auctions are guaranteed up to $250, the network said.

To maintain the integrity of the auctions, sellers must be over 18 and have a valid credit card. All listings are automatically screened for offensive text and images and are manually screened for offensive content before the listing goes live on the site.

The auction service is up against some major players in the industry, such as Yahoo! (YHOO) and eBay (EBAY), but Andrew Hamel, vice president and general manager of GO Network Auction for Infoseek, has confidence in its success.

"GO Network delivers 'total integration' of content, best of breed features and a level of service that no other online auction site offers," Hamel said. "Our product gives consumers a superior auction experience like no other. Additionally, we've built a robust, multi-tier architecture designed to accommodate the heavy traffic that auctions typically attract, helping to assure site stability for our buyers and sellers."

The launch of the auction service is part of GO's commerce strategy, with more initiatives set to be launched within the next six months, the company said.
