Wal-Mart's Redesigned Shopping Site to Debut Next Year

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is busy revamping its shopping site, Wal-Mart.com, which will launch early next year following the flurry of holiday shopping.

The improved Wal-Mart (WMT) site will feature personal shopping aids, a travel service and photo center that are scheduled to be tested soon.

This won't stop the original site from offering a dizzying array of toys, electronics, books and holiday decorative items until January 1, 2000 -- the launch date for the enhanced site.

Beta testing of the new site is slated for later this month and in November. Wal-Mart hopes this will iron out any glitches.

"Beta testing our redesigned store with our associates gives us the benefit of honest, informed input," said Glenn Habern, senior vice-president of new business development at Wal-Mart. "Other than our customers, no one is closer to knowing and understanding what is expected of Wal-Mart."

The expanded site was created to meet the demands of the more than 90 million customers who shop their weekly. The company estimates it will have more than 600,000 items by the end of the first quarter.
