Verisign Goes Wireless

VeriSign Inc. Monday rolled out a new suite of services aimed at accelerating the growth of wireless electronic commerce.

The new advancements include:

  • Wireless personal trust agent: Micro-client code which can be embedded in handheld devices enabling them to use private keys along with digital certificates and signatures
  • Short-lived wireless server certificates: New 'mini-digital certificates' which provide both authentication and real-time certificate validation for handhelds
  • Gateway-assisted SSL: A new trust model enabling network service providers to substitute existing SSL certificates with wireless certificates

Verisign (VRSN) also rolled out a new group of wireless trust services which are designed to authenticate buyers, sellers and developers.

The company also plans to offer new validation and payment services for wireless devices.

The wireless Internet is poised for explosive growth and, like the wired world, requires a 24x7 global trust infrastructure to make it safe for e-commerce," said Stratton Sclavos, Verisign president and chief executive officer.
