Office Depot Partners With Trilogy for Intranet-based E-Commerce

Office Depot Inc. and Trilogy Software Inc. formed a partnership to introduce an extensive e-commerce buy-side solution for business customers.

The joint effort teams Office Depot Online with Trilogy's just launched Buying Chain, a broad-market product designed to allow business buyers to realize the benefits of electronic commerce. Buying Chain is made so employees can buy through a Web browser on their desktops, while the company maintains approval routings and business rules, it said.

Trilogy and Microsoft will provide joint marketing support for Trilogy's Buying Chain product, which will make it easier for businesses to interact with their partners online. Hewlett-Packard is also a partner.

By providing a buy-side commerce solution that can be quickly deployed on customer-hosted intranet servers, Office Depot said it will help its customers receive the full benefit of the Office Depot electronic commerce Web site. With Buying Chain, Office Depot business customers can authorize employees to shop and make purchase requests from online catalogs and still ensure controlled buying behavior, the companies said.

Buying Chain provides Office Depot customers complete access to its product catalog, with real-time pricing and availability. In addition, companies can create customer catalogs based on the products at Office Depot Online. Buying Chain customers can make purchase requests for Office Depot products and automatically route these requests through internal approval channels before ordering.

Companies can download Buying Chain for a free 30-day trial over the Buying Chain Web site, the firm said, and start purchasing immediately from Office Depot, software seller Beyond.com and other suppliers.

Trilogy, based in Austin, TX, said a company with 100 users can download the software for $995, for up to 500 users the software is $4,995 and an unlimited license is available for $9,995.
